Sailing & Storage
Chelsea Yacht Club is an 'off the beach' sailing club traditionally catering to dinghy and catamaran classes, with a vibrant racing and social scene on Friday nights and Saturdays. Classes of boat that sail at Chelsea include Sabres, Pacers, Javelins, Impulses, Quests, Lasers, LW Sharpies, and various catamarans. Classes are not limited to this list as club racing is formulated based on yardstick, allowing for mixed fleet racing. There is a variety of racing on offer with a mixture of passage racing, stern chasers, and standard fleet racing. Standard fleet racing is run on Saturday afternoons, usually with a 2pm first start.
With the Club facilities open on Saturday from mid-morning, many sailors and volunteers meet at the club prior to racing for coffee and lunch, with a competitor briefing prior to racing, and the bar open after racing for the post-race “debrief” over a drink.
The opportunity to be involved in Saturday afternoon racing is open to everyone, you don’t have to have your own boat, your own crew and with our SailPass system, you don’t have to be a member to try it out. The club has a boat booking system that can be used to hire the club Pacers or Quests for racing, and there are many opportunities to crew with other sailors. The club provides coaching opportunities on water during racing in the form of a ‘Gold’ Fleet, with an experienced coach helping you around the course.
If racing isn’t your thing and you and to work on your sailing skills, there is a ‘Green’ fleet led by a coach that takes people through drills and exercises to help improve their boat control and introduce them to racing scenarios and techniques.
Storage at CYC
There are two storage options available with Chelsea, at the clubhouse on Chelsea foreshore and the Boat Hub, a warehouse location in Chelsea Heights. Storage at the Clubhouse is available for all monohull dinghies in our racking system with ground level and rack level storage available. There is also storage available for SUPs and Kayaks on the ‘top level’ of the racks. A condition of storage at the clubhouse is that the boat is regularly used during the sailing season.
Storage at the Boat hub is available for all monohull dinghies and some catamarans that fit within the dimension parameters. There are two levels of storage at the hub, with a travelator lift for the Mezzanine level, to transport boats up and down.
Storage fees at each location are set based on several factors including convenience and demand. To view the fees and submit a storage application, please find the document available for download below.
